Vocabulary

Does this sound familiar?

I can't find material to learn Amharic.

There is just not a lot of high quality material out there to help learn Amharic. But with this self-paced online course, you will get all you need to learn how to read, write and speak Amharic. This course includes games, quizzes, worksheets, and audio to make learning Amharic achievable.

I don't have the time.

It takes time to learn a foreign language or teach it to your children. But with our online course, the lessons are broken down into small segments. All it takes is 10 minutes before dinner or on a Saturday, to progress on the journey to learn Amharic. It may take one month or 10 months, work at your own pace and cancel anytime.

My child thinks it's boring.

If kids aren’t having fun, they are not going to learn. You can try and use boring workbooks or books without color to teach and learn Amharic, but how long will that be interesting. This course is a fun interactive way to learn Amharic. It will keep you engaged and interested.

Have Fun Learning Amahric

Learn to communicate.

Let’s start with the basics: How do you introduce yourself in Amharic? What are the Amharic words for household items, days, transportation, and more? Using stories, games, quizzes, and worksheets, you will have EVERYTHING you need to begin learning and having conversations in Amharic.

Learn to read.

Amharic is a phonetic language. Once you learn the alphabet, you will be able to read and learn everything! This course will teach you all the letters in the Amharic alphabet in short, fun lessons.

Learn to write.

The next step after learning to read is learning to write. With our one of a kind fidel font, you will watch videos that show you every pen stroke for each letter. Then it's your turn to practice with handwriting worksheets so you can trace and write the fidel.

Put it all together.

Learning basic vocabulary and how to read is great. But you also need to know basic grammar to begin to use that knowledge to communicate YOUR thoughts and ideas. Language does not become communication until you are able to use it to express yourself and put it all together.

Why Create this Course?

Growing up I always felt trapped between two worlds.  I was an Ethiopian living in America.  I had one culture at home and a different culture at school.  At times, I really did not know who I was, what my identity was.  It is a story that is shared with many Ethiopian children in America, many of the people that I grew up with, those that were adopted from Ethiopia, and many of those I have talked with that grew up here.  Not really feeling connected with or a part of either culture.

I decided to perfect my Amharic and teach it to my children.  BUT I could not find material that was in both English and Amharic as well as material that would be engaging and fun for my children.  So I went on the journey to create materials that I could use to teach my children Amharic.  I first started by creating the Let’s Learn the Amharic Alphabet workbook and then the First Amharic Words App

As I started to teach my children Amharic, I saw that other families wanted to teach their children Amahric as well.  So I began teaching Online Amharic classes.  The classes included songs, games, stories, and culture.  The learners were having fun and learning Amharic.  I took everything that I had learned from those classes on how to teach Amharic and have included in this course.

Learning Amharic (Amarigna) helped me connect with my culture.  It helped me feel more connected with who I was as an Ethiopian.  It is said that “Language is the doorway to culture”.  This has definitely been true in my case.  Learning and knowing my language has connected me with my culture, with who I am.

I created this course for all children of Ethiopia, no matter what age.  I created this course so that they will begin to learn the language of Ethiopia and feel a part of Ethiopia.  I created this course to help them feel confident in who they are.  I want each person that takes this course to know they are unique and they are connected with that uniqueness.  This course will begin their journey to reading, writing, and communicating who they are.

Each lesson is broken down into small sections.  Each section may take 5-7 minutes with a full lesson taking from 10-20 minutes.  This course is self-paced and can be completed as quickly or as slowly as needed.

Amharic Academy can be adapted for any age.  Reading age children and older will easily be able to complete the course on their own.  Younger children could definitely use the program with parental assistance.  And because of the unique nature of this course that combines vocabulary, grammar, reading and handwriting instruction it can be very valuable to adults wanting to learn Amharic as well.

Amharic is such a rich language that this course only touches on the basics.  Plans are underway to add additional grammar lessons, reading lessons, and most importantly culture and history lessons.

We plan on offering live zoom practice/connection sessions for those taking the online course.  Children will be able to practice what they are learning live through fun games as well as connect with other children to learn more about Ethiopian history, culture, and Amharic.
